Cooking Class

Tuesday, February 3rd, 2009

I just received this e-mail news letter from my good friend Malia Russell. This sounds like a great opportunity for anyone looking for a great chance to learn a few things in the kitchen.

I just talked to Shelley over at One Roast Vegetable and she told me she decided to do a re-launch of her cooking class. http://tinyurl.com/oneroastveg We decided to do this as part of our home school “Home Ec” curriculum and the girls have loved it. We are on week three, and it has become our favorite class! The lessons take about an hour a week for my girls. We usually watch the video, then get out all the ingredients, then go through the video one more time, pausing it and doing the steps together. For most of it, my girls (8 & 10) are working independently, and I step in and help if they are dealing with the stove top or oven. I told Shelley she really needs to offer this as a Middle School or High School curriculum. I know She is working on creating something special for home schoolers, but in the meantime, if you want to take the class immediately, she has opened a second class…but the spots are filling up quickly. There are 33 spots left as of this writing. Last time I sent this to my list all the spots filled up within 4 hours, and I would not want that to happen to you. If you want to join the class, go sign up for her free introductory lessons. After that, you will have the option to pay for the class (Less than the cost of ONE dinner out!). The 14 week class will start THIS Wednesday, and so that everyone can start at the same time, registration closes Tuesday at Midnight EST. (Oh, in case you are wondering you do the classes on your own schedule, anytime during the week The new lessons are posted on Mondays.) If you want to try out the free lessons, go here: http://tinyurl.com/oneroastveg But hurry! I do not want you to miss out when it sells out this time. Here is where I blogged about the class already: http://www.homemaking911.com/2009/01/20/online-cooking-class-making-eggs/ http://www.homemaking911.com/2009/01/31/homemade-egg-english-muffin-sandwiches/ Oh, if you really want to take the class and it is sold out, I know she is working on relaunching it again some time in March.

Happy Homemaking!

The History of the Apron

Thursday, August 21st, 2008

Here is an article that I posted last year when it first came out. Before I lost all my blog content in a datebase disaster. I first found this article in an Above Rubies Magazine. Where I took the time to ask Mrs. Campbell ( the owner) if it was ok to post it on my blog. Well, it seems that the article has traveled full circle. From being posted here to being e-mail to me last night by my Aunt. It has traveled around the great big WWW and back again, so I thought now was a good time to re-post it here. I hope you all enjoy it.

oh yea, don’t forget about the apron give-away starting the first of Sept.

The History of ‘APRONS’

Aprons I don’t think our kids know what an apron is. The principal use of Grandma’s apron was to protect the dress underneath, but along with that, it served as a potholder for removing hot pans from the oven. It was wonderful for drying children’s tears, and on occasion was even used for cleaning out dirty ears . From the chicken coop, the apron was used for carrying eggs, fussy chicks, and sometimes half-hatched eggs to be finished in the warming oven. When company came, those aprons were ideal hiding places for shy kids. And when the weather was cold, grandma wrapped it around her arms. Those big old aprons wiped many a perspiring brow, bent over the hot wood stove. Chips and kindling wood were brought into the kitchen in that apron. From the garden, it carried all sorts of vegetables. After the peas had been shelled, it carried out the hulls. In the fall, the apron was used to bring in apples that had fallen from the trees. When unexpected company drove up the road, it was surprising how much furniture that old apron could dust in a matter of seconds. When dinner was ready, Grandma walked out onto the porch, waved her apron, and the men knew it was time to come in from the fields to dinner It will be a long time before someone invents something that will replace that “old-time apron” that served so many purposes.
